Variety: Crljenak Kastelanski
Tasted: November 2023
Matela is a cult wine personality in Dalmatia. This Kastela based winemaker is a master of local varieties and produces amazing wines packaged in some of the most outdated label designs to grace the shelves of Croatian wine stores… and that’s saying something. Crljenak Kastelanski, which is a Croatian name for this country’s most internationally renowned variety – Zinfandel – finds one of its best homes in Matela Winery.
Color is ruby of medium intensity
On the nose the wine is of medium intensity. Aromas are of sour cherry, blueberry, fresh vanilla, plum jam, cranberry juice and raisins.
On the palate Matelja Crljenak 2019 is a juicy wine with surprising acidity. Tannin structure is velvety and of medium intensity. It is a succulent wine, lively and very much still rising in its power. It will be able to age for at least 10 years, but is very much ready to drink now.
Matela Crljenak 2019 is a wine paired beautifully with roast lamb, venison, tuna steal or vegan lentils based burger.
