Croatian Wine & Food Experience, Oakville, Canada

It was a great pleasure helping to make another Croatian wine and food event in Ontario happen. Our Bozidar Jukic (@croatian_wine_guy) appeared as a co-host in Oakville’s Verace restaurant alongside Diana Skara Becevello of @girlsdrinkwinetoo fame. The meticulous organisation of the event was courtesy of Events & Co’s (@eventco) Nicole Simunac and Diana Skara Becevello.

Verace restaurant (@verace_oakville) in Oakville, Ontario offers globally renowned Italian hospitality in a picture-perfect part of town, right by Lake Ontario. The restaurant features a private event venue that made a great setting for this sold-out event. Another key to the success of the event was Croatian chef Tomo Kovacek (@chef_tomo) who’s behind an amazing five course authentic Croatian dinner. These accompanied a wonderful selection of Croatian wines from our favourite distributor Croatian Unpacked (@croatia_unpacked).

Diana and Bozidar had the pleasant task of entertaining hungry and thirsty wine lovers looking to enjoy the tastes and aromas of Croatia. With a mix of information on Croatian wine scene and amazing food and wine, the evening went off without a hitch. The attendees socialised long after the event. Ultimately, Croatian wine is best paired with good company.

Croatian wine and food at the event

Croatian Wine at the event

Coronica, CO2

Traditional method sparkling wine by one of the kings of Istrian wine. This 100% Malvasia Istriana sparkling wine spent 40 months of the lees. Therefore, it is complex and rich and showcases some of the best aromatic characteristics of the variety.

Stina, Posip

Brac Island winery knocks it out of the park with this crowd pleaser. It is fruity and refreshing with pleasant minerality that makes it into a perfect pairing with scallops crudo. Posip shows once again why it is the most popular white variety of Dalmatia.

Baracija, Clai

Orange wine by Clai Winery. This might be all the description discerning wine lovers in Croatia need. Baracija is another Malvasia Istriana wine of the event, but this one with a very different character. Its pairing with salted sardines and potato salad was our favourite of the night.

Saints Hills, St. Roko

Our friends at Saints Hills Winery on Peljesac Peninsula are responsible for this beautifully crafted, lively Plavac Mali. Their Komarna vineyards provide grapes with lively acidity creating a spicy and fruity wine that is great with food.

Zlatan Otok, Plavac Mali

Plenkovic family’s Zlatan Otok Winery is a Hvar Island legend. Their Plavac Mali is a perfect example of the classical expression of the variety. It features a strong structure and aromas of both fresh and sun dried fruit, as well as a clear spicy note.

Coronica Gran Teran

They don’t make Gran Teran every year at Coronica Winery. But when they do, it is a beautiful beast of a wine. Famous Istrian variety is responsible for this juicy and big, but well refined red wine. It is a great contender for the very top of the list of Teran wines.
